TITLE: ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT INTERN (RSS)
LOCATION: ELIZABETH, NJ
START DATE: 9/1/2022
DURATION: 3-4 MONTHS - preference given to candidates that can
commit to a full academic year
POSITION REPORTS TO: CASEWORKER, SOPHIE JIBNIE CEUS
BACKGROUND: International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the
world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and
rebuild their lives. At work in more than 40 countries and over 20
U.S. cities, the IRC provides resettlement, education and
empowerment support to refugees and displaced people.SCOPE OF WORK:
The Economic Empowerment program aims to provide newly arrived
immigrants with the resources they need to adjust to life in the
United States and set them on a path towards self-sufficiency.
Through the Refugee Support Services (RSS) program, caseworkers
provide direct case management to clients, focusing on Cuban and
Haitian families. The Economic Empowerment Intern (RSS) will
support the RSS Caseworker in providing essential services to these
families.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Economic Empowerment Intern (RSS) will
support the RSS Caseworker by providing direct case management
services to clients, assisting with administrative tasks,
conducting community resource research, and corresponding with
local partners. *This is an unpaid internship position.*STANDARD
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct eligibility assessments and intake interviews with new
clients
Help clients complete applications for public benefits and other
forms of assistance
Research and compile up-to-date lists of community resources such
as food banks, clothing drives, and pro bono legal
consultations
Write letters, referrals, and other essential documents
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Student will learn how to effectively deliver social services to
diverse populations
Student will learn more about the cultural, contextual, and legal
factors that affect our clients, particularly Cuban and Haitian
Entrants
Student will learn how resettlement agencies interact with other
partners to serve refugees and other categories of immigrants in
the NY/NJ area
Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS:Bachelors in related subject (Social Work,
International Relations, Criminal Justice, Education, Legal
Studies, etc.) preferred; or, currently enrolled in program; or
previous social services provision experience
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel desired
Experience providing direct client services (customer service,
tutoring, etc.) desired
Fluency in Haitian Creole highly desired; proficiency in Haitian
Creole required; proficiency in Spanish an asset
Experience working with Haitian population highly desired
