Children's Literacy InitiativeFounded in Philadelphia in 1988,
Children's Literacy Initiative (CLI) is a national 501c3 working to
advance equity in public education in the U.S. by ensuring Black
and Latinx children achieve reading success by the end of third
grade. CLI accomplishes this through job-embedded coaching and
professional development, seminars, and workshops, and providing
the books and materials teachers and children need along their
early literacy journeys.Learning to read has significance beyond
building skills - it is an act of liberation. By helping educators
learn and apply high-impact, culturally sustaining instructional
strategies and nurturing dynamic professional learning communities,
CLI is building lasting capacity in teachers and principals to
advance equity in education.Children's Literacy Initiative (CLI) is
recruiting Bilingual Literacy Coaches. We are seeking abolitionist
culturally sustaining teacher coaches who see the genius in Black
and Latinx children, the abundant capability in educators, and
liberatory power of literacy to propel children into fulfilling
lives and to dismantle White supremacy, and advance equity for
all.The CLI Bilingual Literacy Coach
- Serves as an academic leader who drives an instructional vision
that aligns early literacy instruction and practice with culturally
and linguistically relevant pedagogy, identity affirmation and
antiracist literacy instruction
- Demonstrates a strong understanding of Systemic Oppression as a
concept, its various forms, how it persists throughout society, and
how to identify and work to mitigate and/or dismantle it in the
school, workplace, and community
- Strives to ensure that Black and Latinx children experience the
anti-racist early literacy instruction, support, and advocacy
needed to create equity in education.
- Enables and models a constructive culture of feedback including
both strengths and areas of growth
- Demonstrates a deep commitment to anti-racism in their work and
beyond and, an unwavering desire to continually grow their own
skills, and a passion for teaching & learning.
- Thinks critically to make well-informed and timely decisions to
achieve the best possible impact and outcomes
- Demonstrates a keen sense of self and knowledge of other's
identities and can use this information strategically to inform
decisions, grow and make change in the school, workplace and
community
- Is committed to ensuring that the needs of the ELL students and
the non-ELL students enrolled in bilingual programming are
metBilingual Literacy Coach Responsibilities
- Provide deep support in the areas of second language
acquisition, developing literacy in the first language (generally
Spanish) and a second language, adaption of instructional
materials, formative and summative assessment, co-planning,
co-teaching and leading professional development sessions
- Drive an instructional vision focused on foundational and
comprehensive Spanish literacy skills development
- Serve as a resource and partner with school leaders to align
vision, priorities, and action for child-centered literacy
instruction to aide in ongoing impact monitoring
- Provide professional development and materials to support
bilingual teachers and general education teachers which will
include literacy development in the first and a second language and
instructional strategies for language learners
- Provide instructional coaching & professional development to
teachers around Spanish Language Arts
- Support partnership managers (supervisors) and regional
managers on school learning walks using the ACTT to observe and
score instruction, provide trends to system leaders, school leaders
and teachers
- Organize, prioritize, and track deliverables and outcomes of
the service delivery plan
- Develop content such as model lessons, coaching/training
sessions, materials, and PowerPoint presentations to support
teacher growth and development. Please note that bilingual coaches
will be required to do this in the Spanish language.
- Facilitate collaborative professional learning & development
opportunities for teachers and instructional leaders specific to
best practices in anti-racist, bilingual early literacy instruction
(i.e. grade-level meetings, small group, and large group trainings
(in-person and virtually)
- Provide coaching through varied modalities individualized to
educators' need
- Develop and execute coaching plans in partnership w/
educators
- Leverage organizational resources and technology with
proficiency in data management to enable impact
- Use teacher and student performance data to improve teacher
practice and outcomes for children
- Routinely analyze the quality of instruction aligned to CLI's
vision of the student's literacy experience to create an impactful
learning experience for teachers to build their capacity
- Build positive relationships with diverse stakeholders, such as
School and District Leaders and school community members
QualificationsThe successful candidate is motivated by CLI's
mission. This role offers the opportunity to have a profound and
lasting impact on the literacy and experience of the Black and
Latinx children we work alongside.
- 3+ years as a Bilingual K-5 language arts teacher in
classroom(s) with predominantly Black and Latinx children
- 2+ years as a Bilingual instructional coach
- Must be bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English
- Significant experience teaching and knowledge of Spanish
literacy best practices. Most teachers that bilingual coaches will
support teach in Spanish.
- Significant experience with instructional best practices in a
bilingual setting
- Expertise in assessing, preventing and overcoming early reading
difficulties
- Comfort with modeling lessons on literacy & phonics instruction
in the Spanish language
- Demonstrated track record of success in student outcomes and
teacher practice results
- Deep early literacy content & comprehensive knowledge of
pedagogy that affirms and sustains black and Latinx children
- Deep understanding of approaches to transformational coaching,
adult learning and development that emphasizes equitable and
identity-affirming outcomes for educators and leaders
- Comfort using web-based systems to track project deliverables
and timelines
- Exceptional organizational skills and ability to track
progress, understand gaps, execute tasks, etc. with acute attention
to detail
- Exceptional written and oral communication
- Bachelor's Degree
- Active Certificate in Elementary Education, Early Childhood
